Every author needs a media kit. Why? The purpose of a media kit is to let a journalist, interviewer, producer or magazine/newspaper editor know who you are, what you are presenting and give them confidence in putting you on camera, on radio / podcast or in publication.
Your media kit should also be on your website under its own MEDIA menu button, in a downloadable PDF format and alongside it should be a Zip file with downloadable media such as images, video of prior interviews, book cover, anything that you think they’ll need to use when they do their feature on you.
What needs to be in your media kit?
Here are some media kit essentials:
- A copy of the book sent with the media kit, either hard copy or digital version (optional).
- Author bio.
- If applicable, showcase other interviews you’ve done / magazines etc. you’ve been featured in (it shows prospective publications how you are as an interviewee and provides a track record) and then also include these links in your cover e-mail.
- Your book cover, Amazon ISBN number and Kindle ASIN number.
- Book reviews.
- Your contact information, including social media, phone number and e-mail.
- Detail what you would like to do, e.g. book signings, interviews etc.
- 10 to 20 talking points.
What is a talking point? These are points or questions that interviewers can ask / address with you. They often won’t have the time to come up with these on their own, so this really helps them establish what you’d like to cover in the interview and makes their job a lot easier.
What if you’ve never been interviewed before?
Create your own! Get a friend to record you answering questions from the Talking Points section, work on getting it looking polished and then upload that footage to YouTube and include it in your media kit.
Layout:
An average media kit can be anywhere from two to four pages, but is completely customizable to you. This also applies to the look / feel and graphic design of the kit. It is supposed to be a reflection of who you are, and needs to be as unique as you are.
- Bio page
- Book page
- Talking Points page
- Media Appearances page
- Finish off with a Thank You!
Put the media kit in downloadable PDF format on your Media page, next to a downloadable zip file of bio images, book cover and other materials for journalists and media to use in their articles.
