About Jody Hadlock
After studying journalism at Texas A&M University, Jody was a television news reporter and anchor in Bryan-College Station, Texas; Charleston, South Carolina; and San Antonio, Texas. In addition to writing, her other passion is advocating for people with special needs. She met her son, Marius, while reporting on Romania’s orphanages post-communism and saw firsthand the effects of the lack of nurturing and nutrition on the young orphans. For several years Jody served on the board of directors of North Texas Special Needs Assistance Partners (SNAP), a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live the fullest lives possible in their communities.
Jody lives near Fort Worth with her husband. The Lives of Diamond Bessie is her first novel.
About Diane C. McPhail
She appeared on LiveTalks LA with Jane Smiley, at the Mississippi Book Festival, and the National Women’s Book Association Bibliofeast. A popular retreat leader and teacher, Diane keeps herself busy in Highlands, NC, with writing and painting, with her husband, Ray, and a fuzzy white dog called Pepper.
About Sandra Montanino
By the age of eight, Sandra Montanino, lived in three different countries. Born into a large Italian, Basque, and Panamanian family, these rich exposures immersed her into a wealth of cultures, languages, provincial superstitions, and an endless fascination with her family of storytellers. The stories enriched her life and ignited her imagination.
Sandra’s longtime husband, Gennaro, comes from a family originating in Naples and was born into the immigrant world of Manhattan’s Little Italy. From his experiences and those of his family, she is now compiling these stories for another book. Together she and her husband have five children and fourteen grandchildren and while they lived in Southern California for the majority of their lives, they now reside in Provo, Utah.
Reader Reviews
The Lives of Diamond Bessie, by Jody Hadlock
A compelling novel based on a woman who was a victim, yet emerged as anything but! I could not put this book down. Ms. Hadlock’s beautiful writing makes every detail sing. And just when you think the story is over, there’s a plot twist that will make you jerk up in your seat. I highly recommend this book.
The Seamstress of New Orleans, by Diane C. McPhail
My sister suggested that I read The Seamstress of New Orleans by Diane C. McPhail. When I picked up the book, I was immediately drawn into the story., so much so that I could not stop reading. Taking a brief break to cook and eat dinner, I finished the book in one day!
The Weight of Salt, by Sandra Montanino
Masterfully written, the author achieves a state of high drama within the very first few pages of this story. The reader immediately feels a sense of the characters’ passions, beliefs, and griefs, all occurring within a vividly depicted historical setting. This book tells of the immigration experience of one family with gritty detail. The story is engaging, complete with well-developed, touching and humorous extended family members.
